About Us

From a Dream to a Reality

Mountain Area Pediatrics (MAPA) transitioned from being a dream to a reality when Dr. J. Bennett Bailey started the practice in 1980.  Dr. Bailey (Dr. Ben as he is known by his patients and countless others who adore him) strived to provide personalized, thoughtful, compassionate care to his patients.  He always took time to listen.  Many have said that "Dr. Ben is worth the wait because I know that when he is with my child, my child is the only thing in this world during the very special visit."  Since 1980, more than 60,000 children have passed through the doors of MAPA.  It is exciting to note that many of our patients now are actually "second generation" MAPA patients.  You see, Dr. Ben's vision has been shared by others associated with the practice.

Dr. Ben passed away January 29, 2018 at his home in Asheville. Dr. Ben was a great leader in the Asheville pediatric community until his retirement.  Dr. Ben served many roles in the Asheville medical community: educator, mentor, administrator, patient champion, and primary care pediatrician. His favorite role was the latter, providing comprehensive, intelligent, medical care in a way only Dr. Ben could, one patient in a room at a time.

MAPA physicians and staff strive to continue Dr. Ben's legacy of providing close, personalized doctor/patient/family relationships. Thank you Dr. Ben for sharing your vision with us!

Our Services

Appointment times are available daily for a variety of needs including Newborn Visits, Well Child Visits, Hospital Follow-ups, Behavior Consultations (including diagnosing and management of ADD/ADHD), Nutrition and Exercise Counseling, Asthma and Same Day Sick Visits. We have a co-management agreement with a behavioral health facility and we can refer to outside behavior health professional if needed. Dental varnish is available at well child visits for our younger patients. MAPA is equipped with an onsite lab offering multiple diagnostic tests. As part of our advanced care team we have a group of telephone triage nurses, including RN’s and LPN’s, who are available to speak to you as about the health of your child. Pediatric nurses are available via telephone to help with unexpected late evening or early morning issues when our office is closed. One of our physicians is always on call and the triage service has direct access to them if needed.

Our Hours

Regular hours are Monday-Friday 8:30-4:00. During this time you can speak with a triage nurse, request prescription refills, schedule appointments, or speak with the business office.

Early morning acute care clinic is offered on a first come, first served basis from 7:30am - 8:30 am Monday - Friday. It is not necessary to call for an appointment during this time frame. After 8:30 am, "walk-in" patients are triaged by a nurse.

Our telephone nurses will be available beginning at 4:00pm Monday - Friday to assist you with advice/coaching (via telephone) or for scheduling appointment times typically beginning at 5:00pm. Please note that the physician on call is responsible to determine when the office will close based on patient need.

On Saturday and Sunday our telephone triage nurse will be available at 8:30 am to assist you with advice/coaching (via telephone) or scheduling a sick visit appointment for the same day if warranted. The physician on call will determine when the office will close based on patient need. We are also open on holidays (except Christmas Day) following the same schedule as weekends.

Please note:  There is an additional charge for each of these visits.
